Education & Experience

Over 30 Years of Continuous Experience: Unlike many new hair transplant surgeons who have changed their careers from unrelated specialties to the field of hair restoration, Dr. Panagotacos has been performing hair restoration surgery continuously since the beginning of his residency in 1969. He is a trained specialist in hair and skin conditions generally, and hair restoration specifically. In 1974, he opened his dermatology practice in San Francisco, where he has now been practicing for over 30 years. He estimates that he has performed well over 10,000 hair restoration surgeries during this time.

Most of Dr. Panagotacos' professional time is spent performing hair restoration surgery and prescribing medication for hair restoration. However, he still enjoys practicing and teaching general dermatology and dermatological surgery.

Academic Work:
Over 30 years of Continuous Education: A strong believer in the medical tradition that a doctor's role is to teach (the word "Doctor" means "teacher"), Dr. Panagotacos stays current on the latest developments in his field by preparing for lectures and demonstrations he gives to medical Interns and Residents at two San Francisco hospitals.

As an Assistant Clinical Professor, Dr. Panagotacos teaches Interns and Residents dermatology and dermatologic surgery, with an emphasis on surgical hair restoration at the University of California at San Francisco (UCSF) Medical School Dermatology Department.

In 1976, Dr. Panagotacos was appointed to the Medical Education Committee at Saint Mary's Medical Center in San Francisco, a position he held for ten years. Dr. Panagotacos has also lectured to surgeons on hair transplantation in both the U.S. and Europe, including seminars and live workshops in Athens, Greece.

He did his internship in Internal Medicine at St. Mary's Medical Center in San Francisco, California from 1968-1969 and his residency in Dermatology at Louisiana State University Charity Hospital in New Orleans, Louisiana from 1969-1972. The Residency program at the Louisiana State University Charity Hospital had a strong emphasis on dermatologic surgery and hair transplantation, and as a Resident, Dr. Panagotacos performed hair transplantation surgeries nearly every week.

Military Service:
Following his residency, Dr. Panagotacos served two years in the US Army. He achieved the rank of Major while working as the physician in the Dermatology Department at Fort Riley, Kansas. While in the Army, he performed hair transplant surgeries nearly every week.
