Regain Your Youthful Appearance with a Hair Transplant

Regain Your Youthful Appearance with a Hair Transplant

With advances in treatment options, you no longer need to hide your receding hairline or balding head under a hat or a comb-over. A hair transplant uses your own hair to re-create your natural hairline and restore a fuller head of hair.

At Hair Doc in San Francisco, California, our board-certified dermatologist, Dr. Peter Panagotacos, is a hair transplant specialist. He uses many innovative tools and techniques to help you get the look you want.

Whether your hair loss is hereditary or from scarring, we can help you regain your youthful appearance with a hair transplant.

Hair transplant basics

A hair transplant involves relocating healthy hair from one area of your scalp to the parts where your hair is thinning or balding. The relocated hair fills in the areas where you have hair loss, creating a fuller look.

Though doctors have been performing hair transplant procedures since the 1950s, with advances in tools and techniques, hair transplants provide permanent, natural-looking results.

Hair transplant techniques

Instead of relocating large sections of hair, referred to as hair plugs, we only transplant a few healthy hairs at a time. This allows us to create a more natural hairline and adequately fill in areas where you have hair loss without making it look like you have hair plugs, which look a lot like doll hair.

We use two techniques for our hair transplants: follicular unit transplantation and follicular unit extraction.

Follicular unit transplantation (FUT)

During FUT, we surgically remove a strip of skin from the back of your head and extract the hair follicles. We prepare the hair follicles and transplant them into the hair thinning or balding areas of your scalp.

Follicular unit extraction (FUE)

During FUE, instead of removing a strip of skin we only remove hair follicles, extracting and relocating 1-3 hair follicles at a time. The FUE takes more time than the FUT.

For the FUE, we may use our advanced robotic hair transplantation system — ARTAS iX™ — to assist with the removal and transplantation of the hair follicles. This advanced robotic system allows us to precisely plan the extraction and transplantation to create an even more natural look.

Depending on the look you want, sometimes we use both the FUT and FUE hair transplant techniques.

Is it right for me?

We perform hair transplant procedures to restore a more youthful appearance for men and women experiencing hair thinning and patterned-baldness.

For a successful hair transplant, you must have enough healthy hair on your scalp and be able to grow hair in the transplanted area. We may perform a blood test and a biopsy of your scalp to make sure a hair transplant can work for you.

We offer many hair restoration treatments and can talk to you about your other options if the hair transplant isn’t right for you.

Regaining your youthful look

Regaining your youthful look following a hair transplant takes time. And, it’s normal for the transplanted hair to fall out before you see new hair growth.

Though you may see hair regrowth within a few months, it may take 6-9 months until you notice a significant change. In some cases, results from a hair transplant may take up to 12 months.

To support your naturally youthful look, we may prescribe medication that stops or slows down hair loss.

Don’t let your hair loss dictate how you feel or live your life. Let us help you regain your youthful appearance with our hair transplant procedure. Call our office or book an appointment online today.
